The American Dental Association recommends that everyone see the dentist twice a year for a dental checkup. And our dentists are always happy to see you! However, when it comes to placing a dental crown, we’d rather see you only once. And with same day crowns by CEREC, you only need to schedule a single appointment to have a fully restored tooth. With CEREC, the dentists at Washington Dental can place a new crown over a damaged tooth in just a few hours.
A traditional crown always requires scheduling two appointments, because the crown is manufactured off-site in a dental lab. CEREC, however, provides the means to not only design the crown, but also to fabricate the crown in either our Bergenfield or Tappan dental office. Read on to find out exactly how the CEREC process works.
CEREC in Bergenfield, NJ
CEREC is an acronym for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. The CEREC system is manufactured by Sirona and consists of three components that work in harmony to design and build your dental crown, or cap. The first is a digital infrared camera. Inserted in your mouth, the camera captures a detailed image of the tooth that needs a crown. The second component, CEREC’s computer, receives the image and special software transforms the picture into a virtual model of your tooth. Using this model, the software designs the crown including important details such size, color and shape. Your new crown will recreate every groove of your natural tooth, so the fit is completely comfortable. Finally, the design is sent to the CEREC milling unit that is in our office. Your crown will be precisely carved from a solid block of porcelain in about 20 minutes.
Placing a CEREC Crown in Tappan, NJ
Before cementing the crown into place, your tooth will need to be prepared. This involves removing decay if present and slightly reducing the size of the tooth. We’ll remove a small portion of your tooth structure around the sides and on top to make sure the CEREC crown fits well and does not crowd other teeth. Once we’ve finished prepping the tooth, your dentist will cement the newly manufactured CEREC crown on top of the tooth. And in just a matter of a couple of hours, your tooth will be fully restored.
