In the hustle and bustle of life, it can be difficult to slow down and rest. You may be tempted, even after having your wisdom teeth removed, to try to carry with life as usual. However, this choice would be a mistake!

In this post, you’ll learn why you need to get plenty of sleep following wisdom tooth extraction as well as helpful tips that can make sleep come much more easily to you.

Importance of Sleep and Rest Following Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Although this surgery is considered minor, wisdom tooth extraction still packs a substantial punch for a few days. You’ll need to rest for about 48 hours after your procedure to give your body time to heal. Skipping this vital step could allow an infection or other complications to come in, which will not only make recovery take much longer but also cause you significant, unnecessary pain. In other words, taking it easy and getting rejuvenating sleep are essential to feeling better sooner.

Tip #1: Wear Comfortable Clothing

When you go to your dentist’s office for wisdom tooth extraction, you do not need to dress to impress. Wear clothing that you can immediately go to bed in, so you don’t waste time when you get home. Being in comfy clothing will also allow you to sleep as long as possible. You may already be dealing with post-extraction soreness and discomfort—you don’t need to struggle with your clothing on top of that!

Tip #2: Elevate Your Head

Although many sleep with their head elevated anyway, when you lie down after wisdom tooth extraction, your head needs to be above the rest of your body. This position will prevent excess blood from pooling at the surgical site in your mouth or causing extra pain. If necessary, add an extra pillow beneath your head or sleep on the couch with your head on the arm rest to keep your head elevated.

Tip #3: Take Pain Reliever as Needed

After the anesthetic and sedation wear off, most patients who have their wisdom teeth removed will feel some amount of pain or discomfort; however, it can typically be controlled with pain reliever bought at the store. When taken as directed, this medication can make the soreness more manageable, allowing you to get some sleep.

Tip #4: Use a Cold Compress

On top of pain medication to reduce your discomfort, you can take advantage of a cold compress. Applying one to the outside of your face can numb the area, helping you sleep. Just make sure it’s only on for about 20 minutes.

Although life can be busy and taking it easy can be a challenge, resting and sleeping after your procedure will help you recover. Follow these tips so you can bounce back from the surgery as soon as possible!
